IHG Flash Sale: 75% off hotel bookings using points
IHG just kicked off their 48-hour sale with select hotel redemptions up to 75% off, meaning participating hotels have award redemptions at 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night compared to (for example) 20,000 points per night, or 37,500 compared to 50,000.
The 48-hour sale doesn’t mean you have to stay in a hotel in the next two days, but the deal is valid for bookings November 20 through December 20, 2013.
At first glance, some of the hotels are “meh” – 5,000 points per night at the Holiday Inn Express Boise – but once you scroll through some of the other options, some of the higher-end hotels like the InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong start to appear. This hotel, starting at around $330/night, then goes for 37,500 points.
I don’t find this to be an exceptional value on the higher end hotels, especially when put to the “Maldives Test” – would you rather spend 37,000 points per night for a $300/night hotel, or spend something similar for a $1,000/night hotel in the Maldives? Everyone has different determinations for what makes something more valuable than others, but IHG’s higher-end hotels are generally very expensive, points-wise.
If, for instance, the Grand Stanford was $1000/night, then I might consider using 37,500 points to stay there. In this case, however, it’s not. That said, here are some other examples:
A few examples
InterContinental Bali Resort, Indonesia
25% off (26,2250 points/night)
starting at $145/night (earns you 2,000 points per stay)
Holiday Inn Resort Half Moon Bay, Saudi Arabia
75% off (6,250 points)
starting at $184/night (earns you 1,840 points per night)
Hotel Indigo San Jose, Costa Rica
75% off (5,000 points)
starting at $115/night (earns you 1,150 points per night)
Crowne Plaza Resort Mazatlan, Mexico
75% off (5,000 points)
starting at $139/night (earns you 1,139 points per night)
Holiday Inn Paris-Elysees, France
25% off (26,250 points)
starting at $258/night (earns you 2,580 points per night)
IHG hotels include InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn and Express, Staybridge Suites, Candlewood Suites, and a few others worldwide, so you have a lot of options – but not all are desirable. However, if you need a quick place to stay near an airport, 5,000 points per night isn’t too bad at all.
