UPDATED: Earn 10-25k bonus points with American Airlines/British Airways’ “Happiness Fund”

Here at Carpe Points, we have a love-hate relationship with British Airways Avios. They’re incredibly useful for booking domestic U.S. flights (odd, right?), but generally a pain in the neck (and expensive) to book flights on British Airways, especially from the U.S. west coast.

UPDATE: American Airlines is doing the same promotion with flights through them using your AAdvantage number. See the separate detail section for qualifying fairs.

That said, if you’re planning on paying for a ticket, BA just announced in an email a bonus program where you can earn 10,000 to 25,000 bonus Avios on qualifying transatlantic round-trips (depending on the class of service) and operated by BA, American Airlines, Finnair, Iberia, or OpenSkies after you register between now and January 31, 2014.

When you book…

  • First class, earn 25,000 bonus Avios
  • Business class, earn 25,000 bonus Avios
  • Premium Economy, earn 15,000 bonus Avios
  • Economy (full-fare), earn 10,000 bonus Avios

[/check_list]

This isn’t an amazing deal or anything, but if you’re flying and paying for a ticket, you might as well earn some extra points for it! Note that full-fare economy tickets are generally expensive.

Side note: I just looked up a sample fare from LAX to London; it was $496 each way, in “O” class. It did not qualify.

Before you jump through any hoops or buy a ticket because of this, make sure that the fare class is eligible for the bonus (on BA’s site, click on the flight number to see the class, and compare to the classes listed in the details below)
