New, awesome local restaurants open soon at San Diego International Airport (SAN)

Next time you’re traveling from San Diego International Airport, make sure you take a look at all the new local restaurants and other stores across the airport. After all, who doesn’t like a good local San Diego beer – one of the city’s leading industries (with an economic impact of $299.5 million!) – before your next flight? Next time you’re traveling out of San Diego, give yourself an extra hour and try out of one our city’s local fares.

Since the airport’s new Concession Development Program began to redo the options available at the airport, sixteen new restaurants, bars, and establishments have come to full fruition – and we’ll continue to see more open as the upgrades to Terminal 2 complete.

Local shops open now:

Terminal 1:

  • Ciao Gourmet Market
  • Craft Brews on 30th Street
  • Ryan Bros. Coffee

Terminal 2:

  • Gaslamp MarketPlace
  • Jer’s Chocolates

Commuter Terminal:

  • San Diego Bay News and Café (with Caffé Calabria)

That said, with even more establishments on the way (they aim to have SAN become home to 87 restaurants and retail locations when they’re done – up from 55), I know I’m most looking forward to a few local well-known places: Phil’s BBQ and Stone Brewing Company.

Local shops open soon:

  • Phil’s BBQ
  • Warwick’s of La Jolla
  • Jack in the Box (arguably local, since they’re based out of San Diego)
  • Stone Brewing Company (mockup photo above)
  • Brighton Collectibles
  • Garden (by Tender Greens)
  • Saffron Thai
  • Pannikin Coffee and Tea
  • Two spas (SPAS?!)
  • Several wine bars

Could you imagine getting Phil’s BBQ to go, and taking it onboard your flight? I imagine it couldn’t be any worse than having KFC served onboard Japan Airlines’ flights! Did I mention BBQ can be messy? That said, I’m so doing that.

Although I personally find it somewhat irritating that the United Club (worth every penny) is in Terminal 1 – an area of the airport where I can’t get to if I’m flying through Houston or Newark – the addition of all these new restaurants and concessions gives me more options I didn’t have before. Combined with the airport’s new Terminal 2 enhancements, I really hope that I find myself in a situation where I can enjoy these new places.
